Apple Under Fire: Fake Rabby Wallet App Persists Amid User Losses
The fraudulent app lingers on the App Store, causing financial havoc for unsuspecting users.
A counterfeit Rabby Wallet app continues to wreak havoc on Apple's App Store, defying user reports and raising concerns about the platform's security measures.
On February 16, the DeBank's Rabby Wallet team confirmed the presence of a fake app on the store, emphasizing that any current listing is unauthorized while their official app undergoes a review.
Presenting itself as "Rabby Wallet & Crypto Solution" by "Solution Development," the imposter app has maintained its position on the App Store for at least four days, despite numerous user complaints.
Users have rallied against the app, reporting it to Apple, yet the imposter remains accessible.
Concerns escalated as u/manolodf, an alarmed user, initiated a Reddit thread on Feb. 18, warning others about the malicious app. The user extended the alert to the Apple discussion board, sharing screenshots of users who fell victim to the fake wallet.
Expressing disbelief, u/manolodf questioned the security of the Apple Ecosystem, stating, "How does a counterfeit Crypto Wallet make it on the app store that just steals their money by posing as the real one?"
Victims shared stories of financial loss, with one user claiming a $5,000 scam and seeking reimbursement through Apple support. Another user complained of a 10% portfolio loss due to the fraudulent Rabby_io application.
NFT collector "bthemouth" reported drained wallets after the fake Rabby app imported their seed phrase. The user even disclosed an address allegedly linked to the hacker, containing nearly 14 Ether valued at around $40,000.
This incident echoes a previous occurrence in October and December 2023 when a fake Rabby wallet infiltrated the App Store, prompting alerts from the Rabby team. In a similar case on Feb. 14, a counterfeit Curve Finance app surfaced and was listed on the Apple App Store, highlighting the persistent challenges of ensuring secure crypto applications on the platform.
