Atari integrates blockchain into "Breakout," offering global competition and prizes.

Legendary game publisher Atari is back with a modern twist on its classic 1976 game "Breakout," this time bringing it to Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network, Base. The revival is part of Base’s "OnChain Summer," a promotion that leverages blockchain technology to enhance the gaming experience.

In this new version of "Breakout," players can compete against others for a top spot on the Atari Breakout leaderboard. The highest-scoring players will have a chance to win weekly prizes, including a retro 2600+ game console, gift cards, and more, adding a competitive edge to the nostalgic gameplay.

This isn't Atari's first venture into blockchain gaming. In July, the company announced a partnership with Base, launching a blockchain-based version of their iconic "Asteroids" video game. This time, with "Breakout," Atari continues to build on that momentum, offering players a blend of classic gaming and modern technology.

The gameplay remains true to the original, designed by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell and a pre-Apple Steve Wozniak. Players use a paddle and ball to break through brick walls, but with new features like "Degen," "Bitcoin," and "Higher" modes, which add extra challenges and opportunities to score big.

To participate, players need to connect their Coinbase, MetaMask, Rainbow, or WalletConnect wallets and mint a "Breakout" NFT for 0.0015 ETH, roughly $3.60. This NFT not only grants access to the game but also logs all scores on-chain, ensuring a transparent and competitive environment.

Proceeds from the NFT mint will be distributed to the developers and artists behind each game, Base said. Atari director Tyler Drewitz highlighted the excitement around the competition, noting that the weekly and overall leaderboards offer "some pretty big prizes" for top performers.

Atari’s foray into blockchain-enhanced gaming underscores the growing intersection of classic entertainment and cutting-edge technology, providing both a nostalgic trip and a glimpse into the future of gaming.
